Biography: life and films

Abstract picture representing Gerard Pires
Gérard Pirès was born in Paris on 31st August 1942. Having attracted some favourable critical attention for his first film Erotissimo (1968), a humorous attack on consumerism and advertising, Pirès went on to direct a series of light comedies that mocked contemporary attitudes and lifestyles. L'Agression (1975) was a rare departure into more sombre territory, a dark revenge thriller starring Jean-Louis Trintignant and Catherine Deneuve. During the 1980s, Pirès worked mainly on advertising films, but he made a spectacular return to cinema in 1998 with the high octane comedy Taxi, one of the biggest hits of the decade. His next two films, Riders (2002) and Double zéro (2004), were far less well-received, although Pirès managed to snatch back some credibility with Chevaliers du ciel (2005), a big budget action film that could rival any Hollywood blockbuster, in both its stunning visuals and toe-curling dialogue.
