William A. Wellman was an American film director and screenwriter whose birth name was William Augustus Wellman. He was born in Brookline, Mass., U.S. on 29th February 1896 and died in Los Angeles, California, USA on 9th December 1975, aged 79.

His best films as a film director include Beggars of Life (1928), The Public Enemy (1931), Female (1933), Wild Boys of the Road (1933) and Westward the Women (1951), and whose best work as a screenwriter include Nothing Sacred (1937), Edward Ludwig's crime-thriller The Last Gangster (1937) and George Cukor's A Star Is Born (1954).
