Quand la ville s'éveille (1975) Directed by Pierre Grasset
Drama
aka: When the City Awakes
Film Synopsis
Julien Leroy, a man in his mid-fifties, has given up his criminal exploits
but cannot resist taking on one last job, which he hopes will allow him to
retire in some comfort. The armed robbery comes off exactly as planned
and it appears that Julien can look forward to a cosy retirement - until
it is revealed that the crime was caught on film by a young photographer
who just happened to be in the vicinity at the time. The photographer
is quick to capitalise on his good fortune, by selling his photographs to
a newspaper. Realising that the photographer is the only witness to
the robbery, Julien goes after him with a vengeance. As he does so,
he finds he is himself being pursued, by the police and his criminal associates...

The best French war films ever made
For a nation that was badly scarred by both World Wars, is it so surprising that some of the most profound and poignant war films were made in France?
Franz Kafka's letters to his fiancée Felice Bauer not only reveal a soul in torment; they also give us a harrowing self-portrait of a man appalled by his own existence.
