Film Synopsis
In 1794, at the height of the Terror, the Marquis de Sade is transferred from the grim prison of Saint-Lazare to a maison de santé run by Coignard, who allows privileges for those who are able to pay for them. For more than twenty years, Sade, now in his fifties, has been regularly incarcerated for his debauched indiscretions. Despite his pro-revolutionary leanings, he wins no favours from the new regime as Robespierre attempts to bring about a new moral order in France.© James Travers
